West Herts Medical Centre
is a GP practice with a difference!
We will see you if you are living in, working in, or visiting the West Herts area whether or not you are registered with us.
You are welcome to register with us if you live in the West Herts area.
We provide all the services you would expect from a GP practice as a registered patient.
You will also be seen if you are not registered with us and given the best treatment and advice for whatever health condition you bring to us. This will be limited by what we can safely do without access to your medical history (‘notes’).
Open Every Day
From 8.00 am to 8.00 pm
- including Weekends and Bank Holidays, 365 days a year
The West Herts Medical Centre opened on 1st June 2009 and is one of many ‘GP Led Health Centres’ which are being opened across the country, under a Department of Health initiative. This was in response to a review of the health service carried out by Lord Darzi (click here for full details), which identified that many people were unable to attend their GP practice outside normal working hours and had to take time off work if they wanted to see a GP or nurse. The review also identified that many people would like to be seen immediately they had a health problem, without necessarily having to be registered with a GP practice or make an appointment first.
West Herts Medical Centre is run by Herts Urgent Care, a Community Benefit Society, which was set up to provide urgent care and out of hours services across Hertfordshire. Community Benefit Societies conduct business for the benefit of their community. Profits are not distributed among members, or external shareholders, but returned to the community through the organisation's work. Herts Urgent Care already provide the GP out of hours services across Hertfordshire as well as the Urgent Care Centre on the Hemel Hempstead Hospital site. The Urgent Care Centre is provided in partnership with West Herts Hospitals Trust.
Car Parking
There is limited parking at the medical centre. However, you can drop off a passenger right outside the door and park in the NCP Car Park, which is adjacent to the hospital on Hillfield Road. Then follow the pedestrian signs at the hospital to the West Herts Medical Centre. There is also parking in the visitor car park within the hospital grounds.
Disabled access
The centre is designed to allow easy access for the disabled; the front entrance has automatic doors. There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet in the waiting room.
Baby changing
There is a baby-changing area in the medical centre.
We welcome all patients living in, working in or visiting the West Hertfordshire area. The West Hertfordshire area covers Dacorum, St Albans, Hertsmere, Watford, Three Rivers and their surrounding villages. If you live in this area you may wish to register with West Herts Medical Centre.
We will also see patients who are not registered with us and walk in to the Medical Centre with or without an appointment. You are welcome to come to the Centre if you need to see a doctor and happen to be visiting, working in the area or just out shopping.
