Museum of St Albans

Founded as the Hertfordshire County Museum in 1898, the Museum of St Albans tells the story of St Albans from the departure of the Romans to the present day

In the medieval gallery you can find out about Alban, Britain's first Christian martyr, and the Abbey that grew up around the site of his martyrdom. See objects used by people in medieval St Albans and learn how they lived.

More fascinating and colourful displays continue the story of how St Albans developed from a small market town into a bustling commuter city. Special displays with a wide range of objects illustrate everyday life in Victorian St Albans.

Waddesdon has one of the finest Victorian gardens in Britain, famous for its Parterre, seasonal displays, shady walks and views, fountains and statuary.
It was laid out by Baron Ferdinand to provide a change of mood or spectacle at every turn to delight his guests. In his day, a garden tour would include the Aviary, the ornamental Dairy, romantic Pulham grottoes and a menagerie of deer, goats and llamas. Now, the garden is renowned for its innovative planting schemes and restoration of major Victorian features such as three-dimensional carpet bedding. It also contains a small but important collection of contemporary sculpture.
